Our
2" Post & Beam Chisel
is intended for deep mortising in log-framing and post and beam construction. It has a heavy construction, with an extra long shank and slightly curved profile to facilitate chiseling mortises up to 11" deep. Each blade is hand forged from Yasuki white steel and wrought iron by Mr. Teiichiro Ohkubo whose grandfather started the forge and established the brand name Daitei Nomi 100 years ago. Mr. Ohkubo's grandfather won many prizes including a Gold medal in 1925 and a presidential prize in 1942. The current Ohkubo began training at age 14 and now has 40 years of chisel making experience. He has been recognized as a Koshiki Tanren, which means he has been trained in the traditional manner. He is one of only a handful of makers that can make chisels in the traditional manner, i.e. no use of any power assisted equipment. Overall length is 16-1/2", and blade length is 4-3/4". (1" width pictured)
