They are intended for deep mortise work in carpentry and heavy cabinet work. Mr. Matsumura hand-forges these blades from "white" steel laminated to wrought iron and tempers each blade to Rockwell c64. The blades are finished in the traditional manner. The handles are hand-turned from best quality Akagashi (Japanese Red Oak), noted for its strength and endurance. The handles are double hooped to stand-up to heavy work. Each Mortise Chisel is fully sharpened and comes with instructions for maintaining this edge. Overall length is 12˝, and blade length is 3½˝.
