Our Roughing-out Gouge is designed for the initial shaping of violin backs and other parts. It also superb in any carving work where its size is suitable. Master blacksmith Seji Kusumi hand forges each blade from a combination of soft wrought iron and high carbon blue steel. Blue steel has a higher carbon content and includes additional elements to make it tougher and keep a longer lasting edge than other tools steels. Each piece is individually tempered to Rc 63-65. A Japanese Red Oak handle is fitted to the fully sharpened blade. Blade length is 3½", overall length is 15" and width is 1¼".

Our Violin Maker's Tools are hand forged from laminated Yasuki blue steel (Aogami Hagane) and tempered to Rc 63-65. Blue steel contains added carbon and additional elements which impart toughness to the steel and increased edge longevity. Only the most consummate craftsmen can successfully work with blue steel. Each tool is produced by hand from beginning to end by Mr. Seji Kusumi and his son. Mr. Kusumi apprenticed to a famous Tokyo blacksmith 60 years ago. After ten years he returned to his home village of Yoita and established his own shop. Since then, he has concentrated on specialty tools required by his customers. He is noted as a craftsman who pays attention to his customers' comments and requirements. A number of years ago the Minister of International Trade and Industry appraised his ability and approved him as a traditional craftsman. Not many craftsmen receive this distinction.
